On Saturday we honored the late Coach Virgil Sweet who passed away in May of 2023. Coach Sweet was head coach of the Vikings from 1954-74. During his time as head coach he led the team to 14 Sectional Championships and 2 Regional Championships while winning 296 games. Sweet was known worldwide for his version of the free throw, which was then called, “The Valpo Free Throw Method”. He established the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association serving as the main director for many years. Past his coaching career, he stayed in touch with many of his former players and students.
