Valpo Comes up Short in Round 1 of Sectionals Against Merrillville
The Valparaiso Vikings traveled to Portage High School to take on the Merrillville Pirates in our opening round of Sectionals on Wednesday evening. The Vikings battled throughout the night in a game that had 9 lead changes and 7 different ties but eventually came up short by a score of 37-45.
The Pirates came out and played most of the game in a 2-3 zone on the defensive side and were patient with the ball on the offensive side throughout the entire game. Valpo lost the first quarter 10-14 but did chip away at the lead in the second quarter having us only down by 3 at halftime by a score of 19-22.
Positive momentum and great team defense in the third quarter holding the Pirates to just 5 points had us all tied heading into the fourth quarter at 27.
Breece Walls tied things up with 2:40 remaining in the game when he knocked down a huge three pointer but the Pirates knocked down clutch free throws throughout the fourth quarter which eventually lead to the 8 point deficit for the Vikings 37-45.
Mason Jones led all Valpo scorers with 15 points and added in 11 rebounds while Walls had 7 points and 6 assists in the seniors final game. Valparaiso finished the 2021-22 season with a record of 19-5 including a 6-1 record in the Duneland Athletic Conference. Valpo has 5 seniors that will be graduating this June, a story will be coming out later this week regarding them.
